To celebrate National Sushi Day, we’re revealing fresh new numbers on everything from the top 10 most popular sushi items ordered this year to the types of sushi that have increased in popularity since last year — and the results might surprise you.
The top three sushi items ordered remained the same in popularity between 2018 and 2019, but there are a few new additions to this year’s list that highlight the new trends we’re seeing in all things sushi. Here are the top 10 most popular sushi items ordered this year:
10. Create Your Own Roll
This saw the biggest spike in popularity with a 902% increase in the number of orders since 2018, proving DIY is absolutely the next food trend for 2019. Americans are getting more creative and want to make their own choices with their food, as the “create your own” sushi roll is the tenth most popular sushi order in 2019 — and wasn’t even in the top 10 in 2018!
9. Salmon Avocado Roll
It’s no secret Americans love avocados on their toast but the avocado obsession is so real they love it on their sushi too! Salmon avocado rolls were not on last year’s list, showing the love for avocados is continuing to grow into 2019.
8. Salmon Roll
Although salmon avocado rolls are growing in popularity, it seems customers prefer salmon rolls without the avocado.
7. Avocado Roll
But, even more people prefer their avocado rolls without salmon. Woah!
6. Rainbow Roll
In fact, avocado appears as a staple in half of the top 10 sushi items ordered this year, including the rainbow roll— leaving little doubt that avocado is here to stay.
5. Philadelphia Roll
This roll jumped up one spot in popularity from last year.
4. Dragon Roll
This roll is commonly made up of fan-favorite avocado plus cucumber, shrimp tempura, and eel.
3. Shrimp Tempura Roll
We saw a 226% increase in the number of orders since 2018.
2. Spicy Tuna Roll
Reigning in second place for the second year in a row, the spicy tuna roll is a classic option for most sushi lovers.
1. California Roll
The California Roll is number one on the list this year and was also the most popular type of sushi in 2018.
Cheers to all the sushi eaters on this very special National Sushi Day!
