The reality of life as a college student means constantly being on the go, whether on campus or off. Between classes, extracurricular activities, and social events, it can be tricky to find the time to make a meal (let alone eat three square meals a day), stock up on convenience essentials and study snacks, or get last minute school supplies for the new semester. The good news? Now there is an ultimate lifehack for all of this! Today, we are excited to launch DashPass for Students, the new membership plan for college students that unlocks the best of the local community both on and off campus. For just $4.99 a month, DashPass for Students is the most convenient and wallet-friendly option for students to get whatever they desire delivered on-demand from thousands of eligible restaurants, convenience and grocery stores, and other retailers on DoorDash.

Survey Says…

College students are no strangers to ordering food for on-demand delivery. That is according to a national consumer survey that polled 500 U.S. college students on their eating behavior during the school term as well as their usage of third party delivery platform apps**. The surprising news? 70% of college students order food from a third party delivery platform app in a typical week, and on average, they order 4 times a week. In addition to this, the survey also revealed the following:

  • $$ It’s so worth it: More than a quarter of students (27%) spend more than $100 a week on food delivery, making it a weekly essential for many.
  • Midnight Munchies: 65% of students order late-night food between 9-10pm at night, with 19% ordering after 11pm.
    • Pizza, Please: And when it comes to late night foods, pizza leads the charge with 69% of students reaching for a slice, followed by burgers and wings.
  • Fueling Up for Finals: With the end of the semester approaching, nearly 3 in 4 college students (71%) said they’re most likely to order food delivery when studying for midterms or finals.
    • When it comes to ordering a grocery haul in preparation for midterms or finals week, chips, chocolate and cookies are the most popular snacks ordered.
  • It’s Not All Work and No Play: From college football Saturdays to playoff basketball, 36% of college students are likely to order food while viewing a sporting event and nearly 2 in 5 college students (38%) say they are most likely to order food when hosting a party.
  • Convenience Survival Kit: When placing an order from a convenience store, snacks are the most ordered items (89%). And maybe something to wash those snacks down – whether staying hydrated or recovering for an 8 a.m. class, electrolyte drinks and ibuprofen are the other most popular items.
    • Another popular convenience store purchase…1 in 4 students order condoms for on-demand delivery!
  • Bro, Don’t Steal My Snacks: Sure, sharing is caring, but not when it comes to something as sacred as snacks. When asked what items their college roommate is most likely to steal, snacks came out on top at 37% over items like phone chargers (29%) or clothing (9%).
  • Students’ Tastes Vary by Region: The most frequently ordered cuisines for a night in for students are: American food in the South (60%), Chinese food in the Northeast (56%), American food in the Midwest (54%), and Mexican food in the West (52%).

It’s So Worth It

DoorDash also launched a multi-platform marketing campaign to celebrate the launch of the DashPass for Students membership titled “So Worth It”. The creative will span digital, social, and on-campus activations. To capture the essence of the membership, the commercials were shot entirely by a student director, UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television graduate student Julie Piscina.
